A Robotics Club is Born

15 x Year 9 boys turned up yesterday to the ICTLab in the Library to get involved in building our new NXT robotics kits. I couldn't be more thrilled with the turnout! A range of previous experience - at home, at primary school and none at all.

The first task I have given the teams is to assemble a robot using the kits and one of the designs. I estimate that there is probably a good 10 hours work in this. It was great to watch the students work in teams to plan the task at hand and problem solve.

The students are keen to get involved wanting to come back today and tomorrow and Friday ... both lunches!! One student even asked me if they could work on their robots before school. Today, the word had spread - some more Year 9 boys turned up plus a handful of Year 10 boys taking our numbers to 20 (sign-on sheet being used). Each kit has been adopted by a team with team members names labelled on boxes (ownership).

I saw great evidence of collegiality with exisiting teams welcoming new team members today and introducing themselves without my intervention. One group even had their iPod touch playing with 'music to work by'. Great buzz in the room - we will need to think about facilities for lunchtime in G Block, so it does not interfere with the other (senior) students working on assignments.

Crossing my fingers for girls tomorrow!

Let's Start Blogging

Tonight I installed the NXT Robotics software on my C4T and made a callout for students to help me in my mission for "world domination by robots". My challenge this weekend is to get my first NXT robot assembled and programmed for demonstration.
